Tryouts
With the continually increasing size of our high school, more and more students are anxious to participate in basketball. We are limited to two freshman teams, a sophomore team (if staff is available), a junior varsity team, and a varsity team. We will carry no more than 15 players on each team, along with managers, trainers, and statisticians. Earning a spot in the program is a year-to-year process. A student that makes a team one year does not guarantee that he will make the team the following year. Tryouts will be held the first few weeks of school during the athletic periods. Each player will be met individually and informed if he has earned a spot on the roster.
Tryouts consist of two parts. The first one is the DeVenzio test. This is a basketball decathlon which is made up of ten shooting drills that are each scored and then totaled after the end of the test. The second part is evaluated by the coaching staff in watching the athletes in a full court, five-on-five setting, various drills, and sometimes in a three-on-three full or half-court setting.
The coaches will evaluate players on the following criteria:
Athletic Ability
- quickness, agility, and balance
- strength and explosion (jumping)
- competiveness and toughness
- speed
- attitude and hustle
Fundamental Skills
- shooting ability
- dribbling ability
- passing ability
- hands (catching ability)
- rebounding ability
Offense
- ability to play fast break basketball
- ability to free lance
Defense
- ability to play man-to-man defense
- ability to play full court pressure defense
